Another brilliant day of Kids Footy out there on Saturday. Looks like the older kids are getting more fit, limber and ready for the ‘clash’ for the title again against Hong Kong in May!  The little Sharkies were involved in building those ball skills in the MPH, rolling, kicking & handballing all coming to shape!  Of course in all age levels, its great to see the kids with huge smiles and enjoying every minute of the Auskick program – as that’s what it's all about!  With so many families at AIS in the afternoon, it was a great opportunity for the older Sharks to show off their skills.

If you're a parent of an under 7 player, we would love your help to assist in coaching. If you're here most weeks and are interested, please come and see me and we'll give you a coach's shirt and have you helping immediately. Having more coaches enables us to run a broader program of skills, plus your little one also loves it!

Over the past few weeks,  it has been fantastic to see the development of the skills of all Auskickers and the application of skills in games. We have continued with rotational groups focusing on the skills of the game and we will continue to do this as they progress through the season. Finishing each training with a game enables Auskickers to put these skills into practise and we have been seeing some excellent, free flowing games. Again, we were also able to provide 'on ground' coaching in all age groups to assist in directing kids and also getting everyone involved.

This week we will have reduced numbers of kids and coaches due to the Easter break and it is also Shark of the Month. If you're around, please come over for the presentations at the end of training.

Happy Easter and safe travels if you're away.

From the Gym

Week 6 and we were in the upstairs gym, this session was based more on an AFL skill theme than in previous weeks where we had been concentrating on general skill orientation. The U6’s had a focus on gathering skills and working on picking up the stationary and moving ball below their knees. Body orientation in relation to the ball at this age is quite linear and can be difficult to judge the bounce and flight, therefore, repetitive practice is needed, especially in a game where the ball spends a fair bit of time on the deck! The U5’s had a kicking focus with an emphasis on timing and visual tracking. Focusing on the movement of the ball and following it into their hands is normally a developmental skill, but still needs repetitive practice to improve. During the kicking stations, we were working on foot and toe orientation with the ball, including timing and control.

For those of you playing at home, following are some teaching points that you can use with your kids. You can also use some of the same activities that we do on a Saturday which all helps.

• Gathering: fingers pointing towards the ground, watch the ball into the hands, have feet spread one foot in front of the other, bending at the waist and knees

• Visual tracking: objects of differing weights can be used, floating type objects are a good start, watch the object into the hands

• Kicking: point the toes to kick and finish with the toes pointing towards the target, hold the ball up and down, not pointing towards the target

Cheers, Stevo
