Last weekend we saw young Melbourne star Jack Trengove join us at Auskick.  A fantastic experience for the kids being able to rub shoulders with a current AFL star.  Jack was clearly very popular on the day with the kids chanting for him several times (when photos were taken!!), asking great questions, and getting some tips as he coached the kids during match simulation.  It was also nice for Jack to spend the evening socialising with the Sharks committee and members.  Also, a big thanks to Phil, Brad and Karyn for manning the BBQ.

Our Carnival Day is here! Below are the teams and Draw.  Please note the start times eg. U9's must be at the ground no later 1.45pm. Please ensure you are at the ground 30min before your first game. Trophy presentations for the Auskick season will occur after each age group’s games are completed. U12's Teams will be picked on the day.

This Saturday, we will also turn over the BBQ to the volunteers of Habitat for Humanity. Here is a short write up from Tom Katsaros.

Once again, a group of 10 volunteers with strong ties to the Sharks  and AIS community will be heading to Batam, Indonesia with Habitat for Humanity (www.habitat.org.sg ). Habitat is a global charity which helps build homes for needy families of all backgrounds, races and religions. Habitat has built more than 500,000 houses, providing for more than 2,000,000 people in more than 3,000 communities around the globe with safe and decent shelter.

This latest trip will take place in October, where we will be doing a 3 day build to help lay the foundations for new homes for needy families on Batam.  Our jobs will include clearing the land, beginning the foundation work, bending reinforcing bar, mixing cement and digging many ditches...Each new homeowner takes an active part in the build process, which contributes to a sense of ownership and pride in their new home. We are really looking forward to getting down and dirty for this great cause but we need your help to raise more funds to help cover the costs of this trip and future builds.

We would like to thank the AFL Sharks committee for again supporting us this year and giving us the opportunity to run the BBQ and bake sale at this weeks AFL fun carnival.

The generosity from the AFL Sharks community last year was overwhelming, so we look forward to seeing you there on Saturday - come buy a sausage, cold drink, cupcake, cookie or slice! Your support will be greatly appreciated.  Go Sharks!

From the Oval

It was great to have Jack Trengove heading around the groups and games on the weekend.

Thanks again to all of the coaches who were out there on the weekend. We are nearing the end of the season and the numbers and enthusiasm is still there which is great.

U7 – More game time for the youngest of our oval groups. These guys still need work on the basic skills but are ready for exposure to playing games in order to learn game sense. This week for the carnival da,y they will play all games and it will be great to see them apply the skills they have been working on.

U9 – More game time for the U9s. The games get better and more intense each week and it is great to see the skills that have been taught over the season on display.

U11 – A great game for this group with a crowd to play in front of as well! As the Wombats and Sharks Dads gathered, they put on a great display.

U12 – Game time and some drills and skills from Jack Trengove. These games are high quality and very competitive. Speaking to our guests from the Wombats they were very impressed with the skill and toughness of our kids.

We are all looking forward to the Carnival this week, come on down to see the kids put on a show!

Coach Carmody

From the Gym

After some time off for a variety of reasons, it was time to get back into the Big Gym and get our minds back on footy, especially with so little time left before the end of the season. Both the U6’s and U5’s focused on their marking skills this week, catching the ball at varying angles, enhancing visual tracking skills and point of impact when the ball meets the hands. The U5’s also participated in activities involving gathering skills, a major component of AFL. As well as the players participating in the varying activities involving these skills, we were also fortunate enough to have a visit from AFL footballer Jack Trengove. Jack plays for the Melbourne Football Club and is unfortunately injured at the moment, but his injury is our gain as we were able to lure Jack over here to Singapore. He was more than happy to have a chat to the players, have some photos taken and sign some footies for the kids. A great leader among the AFL community, we were very lucky!

Here are some teaching points for those that enjoy playing at home:
Marking: ‘W’ fingers (thumbs touching) for marking above the head and ‘V’ fingers (little fingers together) for marking and pulling into the chest, watch the ball into the hands and ‘give’ with the ball on impact
Gathering: try and keep your feet, eyes on the ball, fingers spread and pointing towards the ground, body behind the ball
