With a few consecutive weeks of AFL post the Chinese New Year break, the kids are now showing the benefit of consistent practice.  Many more examples of sure hands, all the way through from our kids in the gym to the older players late Saturday afternoon.  We have been pushing the new kit, caps and alike to our players, along with opportunities to get mouthguards.  Please let us know if you are still looking to get playing gear.  Now that most kids have their new guernsey, would be great to see them all being worn each Saturday! We have had a few warm days, but encourage everybody to came and have a kick, and of course not forgetting your water and sun cream!

This week is the annual AIS parents association Fish and Chip night. With this, the school grounds will be extraordinarily busy and this will affect parking as well as availability of the school grounds in parts. Footy is on with the usual schedules for the main oval (albeit a reduced main oval in parts) with the exception of the Dads, who are training at 12.45pm. For the participants who usually go into the gym, these sessions will be relocated once again to the junior oval.  There will be no BBQ this week at all so please bring water or snacks.

Our AGM/social night was held last Friday.  Formalities were seen to in good time (thank you Pres) and everybody seemed to have a great night.  Thanks again to those that came along.

A big thanks to Victoria, Jen, Mark and Ian, who volunteered to man the BBQ last weekend and ensure the kids had the opportunity to grab a sausage and a cold drink.

From the Gym

Last weeks sessions was based more an an AFL skill theme than in previous weeks where we had been concentrating on general skill orientation. The U6’s had a focus on gathering skills and working on picking up the stationary and moving ball below their knees. Body orientation in relation to the ball at this age is quite linear and can be difficult to judge the bounce and flight, therefore, repetitive practice is needed, especially in a game where the ball spends a fair bit of time on the deck! The U5’s had a kicking focus with an emphasis on timing and visual tracking……that’s right, the balloons were back! Focusing on the movement of the ball and following it into their hands is normally a developmental skill, but still needs repetitive practice to improve. During the kicking stations we were working on foot and toe orientation with the ball, including timing and control.

For those of you playing at home, following are some teaching points that you can use with your kids. You can also use some of the same activities that we do on a Saturday to assist with your child’s development. Only doing AFL once a week is not really enough for your child to progress!

  • Gathering: fingers pointing towards the ground, watch the ball into the hands, have feet spread one foot in front of the other, bending at the waist and knees
  • Visual tracking: objects of differing weights can be used, floating type objects are a good start, watch the object into the hands
  • Kicking: point the toes to kick and finish with the toes pointing towards the target, hold the ball up and down, not pointing towards the target

Cheers, Coach Forby

  • Perth Trip: As identified in previous communications, we will be visiting Perth over the August Singapore National Day long weekend.  On the Saturday (8 August) we have already managed to organise a late morning private tour and lunch at Little Creatures Brewery in East Fremantle, followed by the kids playing in a match during half time of the East Fremantle Sharks versus West Perth Falcons WAFL game.  On the Sunday morning we will also participate in an Auskick competition which will be hosted by the Cottesloe Magpies Junior Football Club in Perth.  The intention is to field two Under 9 teams (20 players) and two Under 7 teams (20 players).  We will obviously also try to accommodate siblings that fall just above or below these age groups.  Other events are also being planned, including group dinners and a visit on the Friday (7 August) afternoon, for those around, to watch the Hawthorn Hawks train at Patterson Stadium ahead of their game against the West Coast Eagles on the Saturday night.  If you are interested, please forward your expression of interest, along with child's name and age group, to sharksfc@ais.com.sg With MOM announcing an extra holiday for Friday August 7, this trip is even more appealing – especially for those who do not want to take annual leave.
