We're halfway through our Shark Season already, and Wow it’s been fun seeing the kids' ball-handling skills grow and grow along with their confidence, friendships & smiles – big grins right across their faces when their hard work pays off and it all goes the ‘right way’! Of course The Singapore Sharks AFL club would not run so well without our wonderful sponsors listed above, they really do a great job contributing to our wonderful club.  But of course we also could not do this so well without YOU – the parents, grandparents, family & friends that all contribute in many shapes & forms from coaching, helping out at the BBQ or just being on the side-lines offering your support! And of course our wonderful kids -  It’s all for the kids as our wonderful committee & coaches say – so we would like to say a BIG Thank you’ to every one of you for your support throughout the year!  Go the Sharks!  The 2nd half of the Sharks Season is shaping up to be busy & exciting times for the kids…check out below on what’s coming soon!

Thank you also to all those who turned out on Saturday night at the annual Trivia Night. Thank you, especially, to the table captains who helped the evening go so smoothly, the contributors and sponsors of items for the evening and last but not least, to the MC and quizmaster for the evening, Milan Rokic. Congratulations to the winning table "Squirrel's Army".

From the Oval

The inclement weather hasn't stalled our program or stunted the enthusiasm of all Auskickers involved. We had Wally Gallieo from the AFL up this weekend running our Level 1 Coaches Course and from a coaching perspective, it was exceptionally refreshing to hear his positive feedback about our program and quality of coaches. I had the discussion with numerous coaches on Saturday about the standard of football being played. Watching the kids who have been in our program for a few years playing a  decent standard of football on the weekend is extremely pleasing for all concerned.

On that note, it has been great to see the development of the skills of the younger groups in the last few weeks and the application of skills in games with the older groups.

The U/7 and U/9 group continued with their rotational groups focusing on the skills of the game. All ages played a game after their skill rotations this week and had a great time. It was fantastic to see them put those skills that they have been learning and practising into a game. We will continue to do this as they progress through the season. The U/7 group played a modified game where once you took a mark, you had to handball it to another player. This is teaching them look around and spread with the ball whilst getting more Auskickers involved in the passage of play. We may integrate this into other ages as a means of further challenging them. Next week looks to be exciting with Matt White here, which also coincides with our Shark of the Month.

Shark of this Month – This Saturday with Matt White!

From the Gym

The theme for the U6’s and U5’s this week was kicking, with some other skills mixed in. It’s often difficult to have kicking skills without marking skills also. At this age, often making contact with the ball can be difficult as timing the drop and striking out of the hands is not a natural movement; however, with continued practise and repetition this skill, like many others, improves over time. With remaining sessions we will look at combining different AFL skills that we have covered this year into one. To finish off both sessions on Saturday, we played a game of ruck vs rovers, which has become a big hit with the kids. Here are some teaching strategies for those playing at home.

  • Kicking: ring fingers down the seams of the footy, arms extended (especially for those who kick with the knee); point the toes towards the target when kicking.
  • Handballing: bend at the waist, ball on the platform hand, shallow backswing of the striking fist, catch the fist when striking (no massive follow-through).

Cheers, Stevo
