Hong Kong vs Sharks Carnival Clash This Saturday

The anticipation is over, all those weeks of training drills, practice games, Matt White tips… it's all going to be put into action this Saturday for our Sharks vs HK Dragons Carnival.  Saturday kick-off with the U9s will be from 1pm – however, ensure you are at Shark Park AIS 15 minutes before your game begins for teams organisation & Team Pep-talks! Do not fear if you haven’t registered, you still have time before Saturday so please email sharksfc@ais.com.sg with "HK Carnival" in the subject line, with your child's name and age group.

Below is the start times & Teams ‘so far’ for Saturday's HK Carnival Day – there will be some small  adjustments for any late registrations – so please come 15 mins early before your kick-off time so we can get you placed in your team.

The younger groups in the Gym will still be running this Saturday as per our normal schedule – however, it will be great if our Baby Sharkies could come early to watch and support our Big Sharks at the Carnival Clash and see how all those skills go into action – Go Sharks!

All families, friends & supporters are welcome to stick around after the games for a bit of ‘Carnival Chillaxing’ with our HK guests.  We will have the BBQ running for Habitat for Humanity with all proceeds going to this worthy cause so let's kick back with our wonderful AFL 'Asia' friends and watch the  Nth Melbourne vs Carlton Clash on TV.  Beer & wine will also be available, however feel free to bring along your own drinks & nibbles to unwind!  Its going to be a fantastic day!

Friday Night Under Lights Training – Friday 27th May from 6.30pm

FINALLY… the long anticipation of playing under lights is finally here! Friday 27 May training will be under lights at AIS Shark Park. We will be mixing it up a little for this Friday training session, with some short/sharp drills and then straight into short games for each age group so join us for a bit of ‘kicking the Egg Ball around’  – all ages welcome including our Little Sharkies for some ‘wee’ matches.   Please note that the Saturday May 28th Training will not be on due to Friday night training taking its place.  More details to follow in next weeks newsletter & Sharks Facebook page.

From the Oval

It was great to get back into the routine of skills and drills this week as we put the final preparations into place for our Hong Kong Tournament on Saturday. Even with the torrential downpour and scattered showers all day it was great to practice wet weather footy. It was reminiscent of Melbourne weather except it wasn’t minus 15! Thanks to all coaches who braved the rain and still gave the time to the Auskickers. It is this commitment that makes Sharks the great club it is.

Across all age groups we spoke about the way we train is the way we play games so our effort is pivotal. This will be the key on Saturday as Honk Kong are a quality team and it is going to be a great day and massive test for all of our Auskickers. It is important that the players eat and drink properly over Friday and Saturday as there is a lot of football to be played and if the sun is out, dehydration is a massive factor. I am really excited about the carnival  and can’t wait to see how our Auskickers go against another club. We have seen massive improvements in skills across the season so this weekend will be a great test. As it is a contact tournament, please remember “NO mouthguard, NO play!” Good luck to all involved and I’ll see you out there Saturday. Go Sharks! Coach Murph

From the Gym

Saturday was game day for the U6’s! The U6’s had their second opportunity to put their skills to the test to take a mark, kick a goal and play as a team. Yes, the game was in the gym, the rules were modified and no-one was “really” keeping score, but the kids were able to engage in some friendly competition. For many, it helps put into perspective what they learn every Saturday and what they see on TV, where for others they could play with their friends in a safe and controlled environment.

The U5’s were introduced to the crash mat on Saturday and it was a big hit with all the kids! Everyone got a chance to take speckies onto to the mat like their favourite AFL stars! We also got to do some target work with kicking and handballing.

For those playing at home,Vic here are some teaching strategies to use with your kids:

• Kicking: lengthen arms when holding the ball, hold the ball at waist level, drop the ball to kick don’t throw it up, and point the toes on impact

• Handballing: bend at the waist, hold the ball out in front, body at a 45 degree angle, no big backswing with the arm, catch the fist
