Another pleasing week as our kids continue to improve their skills, but more importantly, are enjoying themselves.  A particular thanks to the coaches for continuing to provide photos of the kids at play.

From the Gym

Week 5 in the Big Gym had a more specific skill focus, still with a fun and enjoyable element. The players were still working on accuracy, team work, control, gross motor skills and visual tracking, but more guidance was being given to enhance specific skill levels and biomechanical movement patterns. The U6 group focused more on foot skills; how they position their foot while kicking through to the ball drop onto the foot, whereas the U5’s worked more specifically on each of the football skills concerning kicking, handballing, marking, gathering and movement skills. As stated previously, we will be focusing more on specific skills and learning movement patterns to continually improve skills.

For those playing at home, here are some teaching strategies to assist your child with improving their skill level:

  • Kicking: pointing the toes towards the target, not drawing the toes back and towards the sky, and hold the ball with the ring fingers down the seam and the point of the ball going up and down, not pointing at the belly button.
  • Handballing: sit the ball on the platform hand, bend at the waist holding the ball at waist level and slightly in front of the body, ensure that the thumb is tucked below the fingers, not on the index finger
  • Marking: try taking the ball in front of the eyes, use ‘W’ fingers keeping the gates (thumbs) closed, watch the ball into the hands
  • Gathering: body behind the ball, fingers pointing towards the ground and spread, draw the ball up when taking possession

Cheers

From the Oval

Slightly less numbers on a very hot day on the oval this week. Again, I want to thank the coaches for their efforts in the heat to help out our kids. It is challenging weather to be completing outside activities but again we had a fantastic ratio enabling kids to get plenty of touches of the ball. If you are watching, don’t be put off by the sea of yellow shirts, more bodies are welcome, particularly in the U/7 group,  and you do not have to be an expert.

The U/7 and U/9 group continued with their rotational groups focusing on the skills of the game. The U/9 group played a game after their skill rotations this week and had a great time. It was fantastic to see them put the skills that they have been learning and practising into a game. We will continue to do this as they progress through the season. The U/7 group will continue on the skill work with some fun games thrown in.

The older groups continued with some skill work followed by games. We had enough coaches and kids to have two teams play and one complete more skill development. We were also able to provide 'on ground' coaching in both age groups as well which was fantastic.

With the heat rising and the U/9 + groups partaking in more competitive work, please remember mouth-guards and plenty of water.

See you out on the oval!

BBQ

A reminder that each Saturday during the Auskick season, the barbeque will be firing to ensure that the kids can get a sausage and a cold drink. We can only do this with support each week from volunteers to help out with the barbecue (Typically we need 3 to 4 people around for the afternoon). Many hands make light work, so please drop us an email if you can help out during the season. We would like to thank Karyn and Nicole for helping out last week.
