What a great year for the Singapore Sharks in 2012 and with planning already underway next year promises to be even bigger and better.

A total of 250 kids – from four to fourteen year olds, from 19 schools – graced the turf at the Australian International School and indoor halls through the year while 50 “old boys” signed on as members and enjoyed a run on a Saturday evening. As the only Auskick program in Singapore, the club has grown with your support to be one of the best community clubs with a great social base in Singapore - and we thank you.

A special thank-you must go out to AIS for their on-going support of the Singapore Sharks in allowing us the use of their superb facilities.

We should also extend our gratitude to all the coaches who spent a considerable part of their Saturdays in helping the kids develop their footballing skills and to all those involved with the BBQ – especially Liz Chegwin – for their untiring work in often very warm and trying conditions.

To our sponsors – MIO TV, National Australia Bank, Dallas Bar, Dutch Club, The Australian International School and Big Rooster Footy – the year could not have been as big a success without their support.

Lastly, thank you to the outgoing committee of the SSFC, Rob Schaefer, Paul Cotter and Brad Harper - your contribution to the SSFC has been tremendous and has set a terrific base for future years. A personal note to Rob to thank him for his incredible assistance to me as outgoing President. Rob and Adrienne have worked tirelessly on the club over the last few years and now deserve a well earned break. With that, we welcome the Sharks Footy Club committee for 2013 – Nick Taylor, Tim Chegwin, Brandon Batagol, Andrew White, Nick Carracher, Dennis Cornwell, Craig Brennan, Vaughan English and myself.

The season highlight for the dads especially was undoubtedly the victory of the Sharks against their nemesis the Wombats in July, with what turned out to be quite a convincing win. Former Sharks President Rob Schaefer, a driving force behind the club, was a proud man as he led the team in song following the win.

The Sharks also posted a victory at the Bali nines in June, taking home the Plate and Dale Carmody taking home the prestigious Player of the Tournament. Well done Boof!

While the “old boys” enjoyed their glory, the kids also had their chance to shine on the big stage. The young brigade headed to Perth in May and strutted their stuff on Subiaco oval while the older boys and girls had the opportunity for a run on the hallowed turf of the MCG, where representing West Coast they accounted for Collingwood in the main Auskick game while the younger kids also got their chance with the smaller grid games.

Again the young Sharks took on Ivanhoe on a chilly Sunday afternoon with the team from Singapore scoring a well deserved win.

The 2012 season ended with a bang. More than 200 people turned up at Brandon and Gabrielle Batagol’s magnificent place to see the Sydney Swans score over Hawthorn in the AFL Grand Final. Everyone enjoyed the afternoon with the kids enjoying a kick of the football while the parents could relax and enjoy the excellent food and beverages on offer.

Planning for the 2013 season is well underway with some very exciting new developments; new sponsors, new uniforms and of course brand new footies! The new season will kick off for the Sharks on Australia Day – January 26. This will coincide with the AISS/ANZA Australia Day barbeque at the school.  This will be the day to register and also pick up your new kit, meet your coaches and perhaps have a kick. Structured training will occur the week after, February 2.

We would encourage those members returning in 2013 to monitor the website. The plan is to have a downloadable membership form on-line which can be printed off and filled in prior to the 2013 launch date which the Club hopes will alleviate any problems with signing up.

With National Australia Bank coming on board as the major sponsor in 2013, the Singapore Sharks will have a new jumper. It will be a lighter, brighter model than in the previous two seasons - We think you’ll like the new look.

We also recognize the tremendous support of our other sponsors, Dallas Bar, Caterpillar, Holiday Inn Atrium Hotel, FitnessFirst, Asian Tigers, OrthoSports, MyPhysio, ACE Insurance and The Butcher.

We are pleased to announce Dale Carmody as the Head Coach of the Singapore Sharks in 2013.  Dale will be instrumental in not only developing the great kids but also in developing the coaches of the different year levels. Some kids already have had a taste of the Carmody style of Aussie Rules coaching through the CCA at AIS in 2012.

Plans are underway to again have the kids in Melbourne for the main Auskick game at the MCG in June and even more exciting, a tour to Hong Kong on the weekend of May 18 to play a round robin tournament with the HK Auskick teams – roughly 10 teams per age bracket. Stay tuned for more on that a bit later.

The Club is also looking to redesign the website and is calling on anyone who maybe able to assist. It might be right up the alley of an IT student looking to get their first website up or seasoned professional with some spare hours to assist. The Club is certainly open to any offers.

As a final note, make sure you mark down in your 2013 calendar – Australia Day – January 26 – it’s the day AFL returns to Singapore at AIS.
