Welcome back to our kids and parents after a one week break for the school holidays.  The kids seemed thrilled to be back kicking the footy, hopefully that enthusiasm translated to school on Monday morning!!

Dan Jackson - Richmond Football Club Visit

The Club is pleased to announce that Dan Jackson from the Richmond Football will be in Singapore on Saturday 10th May as a guest of The Sharks.  Dan is the current Richmond Club Champion & was the inaugural winner of the Jim Stynes Community Award in 2012. Dan is on the Australian board of the Big Brothers, Big Sisters organisation, which mentors young people. He is also an ambassador for Headspace, a national mental youth foundation, and is a guest speaker for Step Back Think, which campaigns against violence.

Dan will be at training for the day to assist with the coaching and offering tips to the kids on improving their skills.

We also have a special function planned for the Saturday night with details to follow next week.

We look forward to seeing you all at training to support this day.

From the Gym:

After a restful break, it was time to return to the Big Gym for a bit of AFL action. The theme for the Pre-schoolers was Kicking and Gathering skills, and we went back to the trusted station work to implement the skills and extend on what the players already do. To finish off with we had a couple of games of Rollerball where the parents/coaches and the players roll the balls at each others feet before they get to the other side. It’s all about agility and evasion and it was good fun! For those at home that would like to continue the skill learning at home here are a couple of teaching points to assist you……..Kicking: point the toes out, not up; drop the ball to kick, don’t throw it in the air; and, run the ring fingers down the seams to hold the ball. Gathering: fingers spread and pointed towards the ground; eyes on the ball; and, bend at the waist.

For the Preps, the theme was all about handballing. The good thing about this is that it incorporates so many other footballing skills, such as catching and gathering. Again, we went back to our trusted theme of station work as the players went through a variety of activities to gain improved technique, control and accuracy. We also finished with a modified game of Kickball, where the players have to organise themselves into a line after gathering the ball. Hopefully, we are able to continue this game next week. For those who would like to continue practising their skills at home here are some helpful tips when handballing – hold the ball at waist level on the platform hand; catch your fist when striking the ball; and, bend at the waist, don’t stand upright.

Hope to see you all this Saturday. Ian Forbes.
