What a sensational weekend of Footy for our Sharks….from ‘Kicking off our new Night Lights” on the oval Friday night,  our new older age groups ‘Shark of the Month Awards’ Saturday and of course our little Sharkies  busting with the excitement of collecting their ‘AusKick packs’ jammed full of AFL goodies. It’s been an Action Packed AFL weekend for all!  Only week 3 and the kids' ball-handling skills are way beyond what was imagined!  The hot humid day also didn’t inhibit some fantastic teamwork on the field with the big kids really hitting it hard in their games. With some great marks (Oscar) and awesome ‘kick for goals’ (Cody, Luke, Ollie and Tiger) we are already seeing some great free flowing footy. Our Little Sharkies had some new challenges being out in the under-croft with the wind, yet we saw some fantastic breakthroughs with little hands getting the hang of ‘handballing’ and kicking for gold!  Of course all these drills, spills and big smiles couldn’t be possible without all the wonderful helpers we have out there, so a big Thank you for your awesome contribution and teamwork….all for the kids' fun!

‘Let there be Lights!’  Friday night saw ‘the big flick of the switch’ Lights Ceremony and what a great family fun evening it was!  Wonderful to see so many Sharks families out under lights kicking the balls around, some great games all under fantastic lighting cover!  A big thank you for our sponsors for the evening. AIS who co-ordinated the evening, our fabulous BBQ helpers who did a wonderful job feeding hungry sharks and the AIS Executive team to celebrate such an occasion. The kids are now super keen for some night games, so keep your eye on ‘up and coming events’ listed in the newsletter.

From the Oval

It was a hot and humid ordeal on Saturday and we had another increase in numbers across the age groups, which was fabulous. We also have a great number of coaches being involved and I can’t thank them enough. Auskickers are beginning to use and apply the skills learnt in training to their game and we’re seeing a real improvement of free flowing footy with a higher degree of skill. We want the Auskickers to be getting as much touch of the footy as possible; by warming up at the start of training with basic ball handling the kids are improving in confidence and getting plenty of opportunity to practise these skills.

Shark of the Month Award

This Saturday, we saw the first of our prestigious “Shark of the Month” awards for displaying all the attributes that Sharks footballers pride themselves on; great teammates, sportsmanship, commitment and attitude to improving their game. We will be awarding Shark of the Month on the last weekend of each month so encourage your Auskickers to keep excelling.

A big ‘High 5’ to the following ‘Shark of the Month’ kids for February who displayed many of the above qualities and more:-

U7 - Griffin Weir U9 - Keira Gard
U11- Grant Dreyer  U12+ - Angus Hay

Being Week 4 this coming week, we need to implement the ‘No mouth guard, no play’ rule. Auskickers have been learning to tackle and we will begin to add this into their games. If your child does not have a mouth guard, they won’t be able to participate in games at the end of training.

Coach Murph

From the Gym

Week 3 and we were out of the Gym and outside in the elements. We had a more specific skill focus, still with a fun and enjoyable element. The players were still working on accuracy, team work, control, gross motor skills and visual tracking, but more guidance was being given to enhance specific skill levels. The U6 group focused more on foot skills; how they position their foot while kicking through to the ball drop onto the foot, whereas the U5’s worked more specifically on each of the football skills concerning kicking, handballing, marking, gathering and movement skills. In the coming weeks, we will be focusing more on specific skills and learning movement patterns to continually improve skills.

For those playing at home, here are some teaching strategies to assist your child with improving their skill level:

  • Kicking: pointing the toes towards the target, not drawing the toes back and towards the sky and hold the ball with the ring fingers down the seam and the point of the ball going up and down, not pointing at the belly button.
  • Handballing: sit the ball on the platform hand, bend at the waist holding the ball at waist level and slightly in front of the body, ensure that the thumb is tucked below the fingers, not on the index finger
  • Marking: try taking the ball in front of the eyes, use ‘W’ fingers keeping the gates (thumbs) closed, watch the ball into the hands
  • Gathering: body behind the ball, fingers pointing towards the ground and spread, draw the ball up when taking possession

Cheers Coach ‘Stevo’
