A BIG welcome back to our existing members & a warm welcome to all our new players & families. 2016 has kicked off with our first training being a Sensational day with super enthusiastic kids out on the oval, the long break hasn’t slowed anyone down for our first week of footy!

Kicking off with our new head coach, Scott Murphy, out on the field, supported by so many of our fabulous community volunteer Coaches, the kids were able to get stuck straight into practicing those ball skills – great Coaching Teamwork that will no doubt continue long into the season with your awesome support.  A big ‘High 5’ to our new assistant coach, Mr James Stephenson, who also started the Younguns’ season off with a Bang with so many ‘hands on Dads’ providing an abundance of Coaches to guide our Little Sharks in the gym.  Great Teamwork Coaches….our Sharkies will be ‘finding the sticks’ and ‘Clunking Marks’ in no time!  It was also great to see the kids ‘donning’ their uniforms for season kick off with many excited faces collecting their new ‘number/named Jerseys and busting to wear them for first training – loving the ‘team-manship’!

From the Oval

What a fantastic start to our Auskick season. The weather was just perfect and it was great to see so many families enjoying themselves. A massive thank you to our new and returning coaches who have volunteered to share their enthusiasm and knowledge with our Auskickers. I was so impressed to see the sheer number of keen footballers ready to tackle 2016 with absolute enthusiasm.

My goals for this year are for all age groups to learn the fundamental motor skills vital for future physical activity and sport participation as well as learning how to interact with and respect other children as part of a team in small group activities. The coaches aim to make learning to play AFL fun, safe and easy for boys and girls. Through our weekly coaching sessions, they will learn the skills of the game in an exciting, social and safe environment. It was great to meet so many people on Saturday and I look forward to an exciting year ahead.

From the Gym

Welcome back to all new and old Sharks Auskick members! It was great to see so many happy faces as the kids were learning the basics of our great game on Saturday. We have continued the theme of previous years by using rotating stations, involving: kicking, handballing, marking, gathering, ball control and visual tracking. These skills will become more specific with time, but for now it’s pure orientation and gross motor movement. If you’re having a play with your kids using the oval ball here are some teaching points to think about to assist with the progression of your child:

  • Kicking: practice pointing the toes when making contact with the ball. If the toes are drawn back when kicking the ball will simply go up instead of away.
  • Handballing: ensure that the thumb is curled under when making a fist, not lying on the index finger. If the child is doing this incorrectly it will hurt!
  • Marking: have the tips of the thumbs together and fingers spread for marking the in front of the eyes. The thumbs are the gates, try and keep them closed, nobody likes a ball in the face!
  • Gathering: have the fingers pointing down towards the ground, little fingers close. This will assist in trapping the ball in the hands.

Lastly a massive thank you to all the new and returning coaches who helped out on Saturday, it really made the program run smoothly. If you are interested in helping out, please drop me an email at james_stephenson@ais.com.sg and I will send out the session plan each Wednesday.

Cheers Coach ‘Stevo’

Club Support

2016 also sees the club have strong support from our corporate community with CAT, Dallas Restaurant and Bar, NAB and AIS– Visy and Telstra. Thank you to the sponsors as well as the many in-kind and product sponsors through the year that help keep our club a great club. Of course our club wouldn’t be where it is today without the wonderful organisational skills of all our committee members – thanks for creating such a great start to 2016 season!  A big thank you for the Sharks community, this provides good teamwork to ensure all kids get a fair go on getting their hands on the ball. The abundance of volunteers we saw on Saturday ensured success for all kids on the field & in the gym, and we wish to see this throughout the year, and of course all our wonderful BBQ helpers to help feed our hungry Sharks at the end of the day.  The great club we have shines more with such great participation we saw this weekend from everyone, which shows on the kids faces…smiles from ‘ear to ear’.

BBQ…Your Skills Required

A reminder that each Saturday during the Auskick season, the barbeque will be firing to ensure that the kids can get a sausage and a cold drink after a hard day's training. We can only do this with support each week from volunteers to help out with the barbecue (Typically, we need 2 to 3 people for each training block – being 2-4pm and 4 – 6pm each week). Many hands make light work, so please drop us an email if you can help out during the season. The kids are encouraged to bring a water bottle which can sit at the drinks station, in the shade while the kids train. Please also be reminded that all kids should apply sunscreen before training.
